Early Years

We have always had cats but our first dog didn't arrive till the late 60s. It was a Rhodesian Ridgeback Matungi of Marshelf (Ben) Unfortunately he somehow got poisoned and had to be put to sleep when he was about 5 years old.

Our next dog was a rescued GSD named Rip who introduced us to Competitive Obedience. He died of epilepsy when about 10 years old. We also had a Golden Retriever, Rosie and a Labrador, Sam at this time.

Dog Training

Rip was sometimes not to be trusted as he would chase joggers and give them a nip if he thought we weren't watching! To get some discipline into him, we joined the Danesford Obedience Dog Training Club. Rip got good enough to compete in Obedience Shows and it was on returning from one of these shows that he had his final epileptic fit and had to be put to sleep. As Sam and Rosie appeared to have nothing between their ears, Felicity obtained a little mongrel whom she named Lucy. She had the aptitude for obedience work and soon Felicity was out of the Beginners Class.

During late 1981, we decided that our large house and very small garden in Buglawton was not the right place to bring up three dogs and so we moved at Easter 1982 to Somerford into a tiny bungalow  with a half acre garden and super wooded walks less than half a mile away.  We didn't like the name which had been given to the bungalow so we renamed it Merrywood.

Enter the Belgians

In early 1986, we knew that Rip's days were numbered and we had been looking for a replacement. It seemed impossible to get a GSD who was free from defect and so we looked at the Belgian Shepherd Dog (Tervueren) as they had some success in Obedience Competition.

Tervueren puppies were few and far between, but, we were lucky enough to find a little bitch in Malvern, so Talamo Flurry (Zoe) came to live with us in December.

Felicity acquired Sadie about six months after we got Zoe. She was a beautiful Tervueren and might have gone far in the Breed Show world if she hadn't damaged her back as a puppy. This caused her movement to be unbalanced and eventually arthritis overcame her resulting in her being put to sleep in 1998.

We bred from Zoe, but, her offspring had no success once out of puppy, so we concentrated on the working side. Felicity took on Bonnie Charlie (Charlie) a Malinois whom she qualified CDEx. Unfortunately he had to be put to sleep after a tumour was found.

Felicity had the opportunity to take on Gwashleas Roxanne (Lizzie) shortly before Charlie died and and she has done well in the Breed Ring and is already showing promise in working obedience and agility.

And Now Pyrenean Sheepdogs

Around 1995 Felicity and I thought it might be a good idea to have small dogs in future and we had seen the Pyrenean Sheep dog at Manchester Championship Show. On making enquires, we met with Brenda Judson and Carabrae Demetrius  (Basil) came to live with us.

In 1997 on a visit to Brenda Judson, we met and decided to bring home Carabrae Madam Butterfly (Mimi). The intention was to show her and also breed from her if a suitable husband could be found.

In April 2001, Merrywood Dark Image (Katie) was born by Caesarian section and was Mimi's only surviving puppy. She is doing well in Breed Shows and already taking an interest in Obedience Training.

The Future

It looks as if Lizzie will do well in Obedience, Agility and Breed and continue her winning ways. It is not our intention to breed from her at them moment. Katie completed her KC Good Citizen Gold  award and is a very quick learner. We enter as many Breed Shows as possible currently she is the top winning Pyrenean Sheep Dog of all time in the UK in the Breed ring having been awarded seven "Best Import" and eleven "Best of Sex" awards at Championship shows. Mimi (Carabrae Madame Butterfly) Has also done well in the Breed ring with three "Best Import" and six "Best of Sex" awards at Championship shows. Katie at the time of writing has produced two excellent litters and one or her daughters is also doing well in the Breed ring.
